What is a Dental Prosthetist?
A Dental Prosthetist is a qualified dental technician
Dental prosthetists originally train as dental technicians and then undergo further training and specialisation. A Dental Prosthetist is qualified to provide diagnostic, preventive and fabrication services for partial and complete dentures, as well as mouth guards.
Dental Prosthetists have Technical and Clinical skills
Dental prosthetists are trained in a wide range of technical and clinical skills pertaining to protecting or replacing tooth function and are highly knowledgeable about the appropriate methods of constructing oral appliances from a variety of materials.
Dental Prosthetists must be Registered by the AHPRA
All qualified dental prosthetists in Australia are required to be registered by the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency before setting up practice. You can only obtain registration to practice as a dental prosthetist on submission of proof that you have successfully completed an accredited post-graduate course in Dental Prosthetics, for which you will first need to have completed a course in Dental Technology. Once granted, registration needs to be renewed every year.
AHPRA registration is mandatory
Working as a Dental Prosthetist without obtaining registration from the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency is an offence. An unregistered dental prosthetist can be convicted and/or fined for illegal practice and their licence can be revoked.
What is a Dental Technician?
A member of a dental team
A Dental Technologist (dental laboratory technician) is a member of a dental team.
Upon prescription from a dental clinician, the Dental Technician constructs custom-made restorative and dental appliances.
There are four major disciplines within dental technology:
Dental Prosthetist VS Dental Technician
What’s the difference?
A dental prosthetist is an oral care professional who has completed extensive training. The first step is to work as a dental technician and work by referral from a dentist. After the training is completed, the dental technician finally becomes a dental prosthetist.
Dental prosthetists are registered to consult patients directly.
A dental prosthetist is registered to undertake the manufacture of full dentures, partial dentures and mouthguards.
Dental Prosthetists are Health Professionals
“When you put yourself in the care of a dental prosthetist you can be secure in the knowledge that you are being looked after by a health professional! You’ll get the most comprehensive knowledge of advanced techniques, new materials and the latest world trends in the field of denture prosthetics.”
